orange stains on towels are extremely common

🔶 1. Benzoyl Peroxide (MOST COMMON CAUSE)

If you use acne products (face wash, creams, spot treatments) with benzoyl peroxide, this is almost certainly it.

Why it happens

  • Benzoyl peroxide bleaches fabric

  • On darker towels it shows up as orange/rust-colored patches

  • It does not wash out because it’s a chemical color change, not a stain

Common sources

  • Acne face wash

  • Spot treatments

  • Body acne products

  • Residue on skin after washing

✔️ Clue: stains appear where you dry your face or shoulders

🔶 2. Iron or Minerals in Water

If your home has hard water or iron content:

Why it happens

  • Iron oxidizes when towels dry

  • Leaves orange/rust stains

  • Builds up over time

✔️ Clue: stains appear gradually and affect all towels evenly
✔️ Common in well water or older plumbing

🔶 3. Self-Tanner or Skincare Residue

Some skincare or tanning products oxidize when exposed to air and fabric.

✔️ Usually patchy and skin-contact specific
✔️ Can look orange or yellow-brown

🔶 4. Bleach + Residue Reaction

Iron in water + bleach = rust stains

✔️ Happens even if you don’t see iron normally

❗ Why it won’t wash out

This isn’t dirt—it’s:

  • Bleaching (benzoyl peroxide) or

  • Oxidation (iron/minerals)

Once the fabric color changes, normal washing won’t reverse it.

✅ What You Can Do (Going Forward)

If it’s benzoyl peroxide:

  • Use white towels only for face & acne-prone areas

  • Rinse skin thoroughly before drying

  • Switch to benzoyl-peroxide-free products if possible

If it’s iron/minerals:

  • Use Iron Out or a rust remover (safe for fabric)

  • Add a water softener

  • Avoid chlorine bleach

General towel care:

  • Wash towels separately

  • Avoid fabric softener (it traps residue)

  • Use oxygen bleach (Oxi-type) instead of chlorine bleach

🧠 Bottom line

Your towels aren’t dirty—and you’re not doing anything wrong.
This is almost always skincare chemistry or water chemistry, not poor washing.
